March 19 COVID-19 Update

Over the last few days, the COVID-19 pandemic has elevated to such a point that the Federal Government has closed the US-Canada border and restricted international travel.  The Ontario Provincial Government has declared a state of emergency and requested that all events be cancelled, and the City of Toronto has shut down all public facilities and restaurants/bars.

At Northwest, we rely heavily on healthy employees as well as our event season.

It is critically important to us that if you are working at any of our static sites that you come to work well-rested and healthy. If you show signs of any symptoms or are feeling sick, please contact me immediately and stay home in self-isolation for 14 days. Do not come to work! We cannot risk the health and safety of you, the rest of our team, and the people we serve.

With the COVID-19 outbreak, all of our concerts (at Scotiabank Arena, Budweiser Stage, Rogers Centre, etc), tradeshows (including Comicon, One of a Kind, etc), and other events have all been cancelled until further notice.

We know this will have a significant impact on your financial situation. We will do everything we can to support you during this time. For those of you who have a vehicle, we may have some available shifts for you at our static sites.

We are also looking into opportunities to provide security services to support the COVID-19 efforts across Ontario. We will keep you updated.

This week the Federal Government introduced an Emergency Support Benefit delivered through the Canada Revenue Agency to provide up to $5 billion in support to workers who are not eligible for EI and who are facing unemployment.

The Federal Government also announced an Emergency Care Benefit of up to $900 bi-weekly for up to 15 weeks to provide income support to workers who must stay home and do not have access to paid sick leave. This measure could provide up to $10 billion to Canadians, and includes:

  • Workers, including the self-employed, who are sick, quarantined, or who have been directed to self-isolate but do not qualify for Employment Insurance (EI) sickness benefits.
  • Workers, including the self-employed, who are taking care of a family member who is sick with COVID-19, such as an elderly parent or other dependents who are sick, but do not qualify for EI sickness benefits.
  • EI-eligible and non-EI-eligible working parents who must stay home without pay because of children who are sick or who need additional care because of school closures.

One of the ways we can support you in this process is by providing Records of Employment (ROE’s). To request your ROE, please visit our website and fill out the form. We will prepare and send your ROE directly to the Canada Revenue Agency within 48-72 hours.

Northwest is committed to protecting the health and safety of our employees and is actively monitoring the situation, taking necessary precautions and planning for any developments.

Thank you!
